Motorcycling New Zealand License (MNZ)

What is the MNZ License for?

An Motorcycling New Zealand licence is used to allow riders to compete at official motocross events, club days, practices, and race meetings that are sanctioned by MNZ.

Join an MNZ-affiliated club

Your local club is the best first step. Head along to their next club/practice day. They can guide you through events, licence types, age classes, and what your child needs before race day.

Apply for your MNZ licence

Once you’ve joined a club, you can apply through the MNZ App or use the new licence application form.

Complete the theory test

Riders need to pass an open-book theory test showing they understand the Manual of Motorcycle Sport, including safety, track rules, and rider responsibilities. MNZ allows no more than two incorrect answers to pass.

Bring your licence and logbook on race day

Riders must take their licence and logbook to MNZ-permitted events, including practice and race meetings. Proof of current club membership may also be required.

Can my child try racing before getting a full licence?

Yes, Some clubs offer One Event Licences, which can be purchased on the day and allow new riders to try an MNZ-permitted event
